About Wairau River

Wairau River Wines takes its name from the beautiful braided river on whose banks Phil and Chris Rose planted their first vines in 1978. At the top of New Zealand's South Island, the river runs through the Wairau Valley in the temperate Marlborough region, which is framed by two ranges of hills. Marlborough's maritime climate makes for a long growing season, and the land bordering the Wairau River at the foot of the Richmond Ranges enjoys long, warm days and cool nights. Five members of the Rose clan now work in the wine business – this truly is a family affair!

About Sam Rose

Wairau River winemaker Sam’s early memories are of working alongside his siblings and parents, not only among the grapes, but also in the cherry and apple orchards. As a youngster Sam had three loves: food, wine appreciation and the great outdoors.
He didn’t face any pressure from his parents to get into the wine industry. “I just love it for what it is,” he says. When he graduated from Lincoln University in 2002, he returned to Marlborough and a new, state-of-the-art Wairau River winery. As for the future, Sam expects never to stop learning no matter how long he’s at the helm at Wairau River.
