2013 Chemin by Punt Road Syrah
“Dark brambles, black pudding, star anise. Bay laurel, musk, earth.” -Tim Shand, Head Winemaker
The 2013 growing season was an exceptional one, composed of cool growing conditions, good rainfall with a few dry periods, and cool nights through the ripening months of January and February. Bunches and berries were small, and colour was impressively deep. Each of these factors contributed to excellent fruit quality overall, with our oldest blocks producing the best fruit.
Handpicked Shiraz from the Napoleone Vineyard, 80% from block 7 planted in 1995, 20% from block 5 planted in 1999, all PT23 clone. 100% whole bunch fermented with 12 days on skins nearly untouched though the cap was kept wet. Sur lie for 9 months, racked by gravity, unfined, and unfiltered.
Halliday Wine Companion 2016
100% whole bunches, 12 days on skins, racked by gravity, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Star of a wine. Savoury, juicy, complex and with a resounding finish. Anise, black cherry, cloves, hazelnuts and cocoa. Autumnal notes aplenty, as you'd expect given the winemaking methods employed, but with numerous layers of texture and flavour, among them sweet, ripe fruit.
The Wine Front
100% whole bunch ferment using the PT23 clone. Blackcurrant and sour cherry, stalks and spice, cracked pepper. Medium bodied, fresh and juicy, spicy and sweetly fruited with whole bunch bracing it and lending a dry graphite feel to the tannin, fresh berried fruit and spice to close. Feels fresh and dynamic, and offers a distinct personality – which may or may not be appreciated by all, but there you have it.
