2013 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Frauenweingarten Federspiel
F.X. Pichler
The name goes back to the nunnery in Dürnstein and is the large vineyard site in the commune of Dürnstein-Loiben. Its vineyards stretch in the Loiben basin, featuring warm soils composed of sands washed out of the Danube and partially interspersed with gravel. This is the ideal terroir for our Federspiel grüners, which are structured like lace, displaying clear and delicate fruit.

There is a delightful and unusual sweet nuttiness here suggestive of raw cashew and frangipane, beautifully integrated with juicy honeydew melon and cooling green herb infusion. High-toned aromatic suggestions of floral and herbal distillates as well as maraschino cherry add equally unexpected allure. “I’m happy that the acidity is a bit high,” remarked Lucas, but the thing is that this aspect is not really overt, but rather perceived as positive refreshment and animation, driving what is nonetheless a downright soothingly persistent performance.
