2014 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Frauenweingarten Federspiel
F.X. Pichler
The name goes back to the nunnery in Dürnstein and is the large vineyard site in the commune of Dürnstein-Loiben. Its vineyards stretch in the Loiben basin, featuring warm soils composed of sands washed out of the Danube and partially interspersed with gravel. This is the ideal terroir for our Federspiel grüners, which are structured like lace, displaying clear and delicate fruit.

Clover and apple blossom usher in a delightfully buoyant (at 11.8% alcohol) palate featuring fresh apple with crunchy snap pea and lettuce. The succulence is utterly seductive, especially given a wafting inner-mouth presence of floral perfume, while fresh ginger delightfully and unexpectedly shares billing with white pepper in an invigorating, infectiously juicy and long-lasting finish.

Super floral scents, almost pot pourri and air freshener, but more natural seeming than that. Smells like lolly bags and ripe stone fruit with just a whiff of tonic water too. Lick of apparent sweetness to taste, and there’s a kind of celery water and light radish character that runs amongst the juicy, bright fruit characters of the wine. It’s easy to drink, shows some layers of interest, goes long and fresh. Spot on if you’re a pure gruner lover.

A juicy white, with concentrated peach, green apple and ripe lime flavours, accented by lemon curd and sage cream notes. Fresh acidity lingers with savoury details on the fresh finish. Drink now through 2019.
