NV Jacquesson Cuvée No. 739
Jacquesson
2011: Winter was freezing and wet, spring was very hot and dry, albeit with occasional frosts. The summer got off to a gloomy start but the growing season finished with much better weather. The wines produced were fine, harmonious and balanced.
The cuvée consists of 57% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Noir and 22% Pinot Meunier, with reserve wines making up 31% of the blend.

57% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Noir and 22% Pinot Meunier, its base year of 2011 contributing 69%, reserve wines 31% - all detailed on the back label. Given the very wet '11 vintage, this has no business being as good as it is. Its almond, citrus and minerally notes have extreme length, as unexpected as it is welcome.

Very fine perfume incorporating warm bread aromas, citrus pith and mixed candied citrus peel, dried apple, wet slate-mineral-like wafts. It’s got velocity in the palate, chalky, edgy, crystalline, more ‘mineral-like’ flavour and feel, set within the frisky tang of fruit and whoosh of firm bubbles. Really easy to drink, has a succulence in all the mix of things. Great.

Jacquesson's soon to be released Cuvée 739 Extra-Brut is based on the 2011 vintage and 31% Reserve wines, all from Grand and Premier Cru sites in the Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne. The 739 is an assemblage of 57% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Noir and 22% Meunier, all fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in foudres. The unfiltered wine was disgorged in July 2014 with a dosage of 3.5 grams per litre. Medium-intense in its golden color, the Cuvée 739 shows a clear, deep, rich and complex nose of ripe white fruits, bread, honey wax, and spicy aromas intermixed with refreshing chalk and lemon flavors in the background. Full-bodied, lovely, pure and fresh on the palate, with nutty flavors and stunningly smooth fruit, this is a full-flavored, wide open yet very delicate Champagne with a very fine and well structured mineral finish. This is not a big wine perhaps (although it starts a little bit as such), but a Champagne full of elegance and finesse. It's a great aperitif and food partner for lighter dishes. And a lovely midnight drink anyway.
