2011 Pierre Amadieu Gigondas ‘Le Pas de L’Aigle’
Pierre Amadieu
It is here, at an altitude of 400m - close, as the eagle flies, to the cliffs of Le Pas de l'Aigle and Romane - that the terroir of Pierre Amadieu expresses all its complexity. The old vines of Grenache and Syrah have for more than half a century faithfully conveyed the majesty of this place. In this exceptional terroir, where each vine produces less than one bottle of wine, the incredibly concentrated aromas are balanced by the enlivening freshness that the altitude provides.
This wine has two important allies, namely patience and time: late harvests and a manual selection of the ripest bunches is followed by intense winemaking methods (cuvaison during one month, during which time the grape skins are regularly soaked by the fermenting juice) for a precise, yet powerful, extraction. The careful ageing (24 months in large 100hl oak casks) allows the finesse of the French oak to be subtly integrated, while respecting and revealing the complex aromas and flavours of these noble Rhône varieties.
This shows delicate fragrances of black fruits, developing spicy and peppery notes on a wonderful, lingering finish The colour is deep and dark. The nose is intense and complex with rich notes of plum and fig. The palate is silky yet full-bodied with delicate red fruit mingling with intense and powerful flavours of black fruit with a hint of laurel. Perfect companion for powerful dishes such as truffle mousse or beef stew, this wine can be laid down for five to 10 years. Drink at room temperature (17°C).
