Trevor Mast Trophy for Best Shiraz, Royal Melbourne Wine Show 2016
Trophy, Best Single-Vineyard Wine, Royal Melbourne Wine Show 2016
Near perfect conditions in 2015 with a cool January and warm spells in February and March allowed for gradual maturation, great acid retention, and good crop with even ripeness. Phenolic maturity (brown seeds/stems) was spot on, and we took the opportunity to experiment with skin contact on whites and more whole bunch use in reds. While it wasn’t the easiest year, it was certainly the most exciting, and wines from this vintage are showing great vitality and aging potential.
The hand-picked Shiraz fruit came from Blocks 5 and 8, on Punt Road's own Napoleone Vineyard, planted in 1991. It was cofermented with 1.5% viognier and 20% whole bunches. The wine was pressed into 500L old puncheons, where it matured on lees for 10 months. Bottled in July 2016 without fining or filtration. The Punt Road team picked a touch riper than the 2014, making for a more generous wine, however the elegance and spice we love in Yarra shiraz is still there. This wine has a vitality at its core that is the benchmark of 2015 Yarra reds.
Graphite, raspberry, sous bois, bright and fresh on the nose. The palate is succulent with apricot-kernel tannin, tightly wound, light on its feet but dense, fruity/plump through the middle, than a long and savoury finish.
