From a ripe and approachable vintage with plenty of depth, this 2015 Yeringberg is a showpiece of great Bordeaux-esque style. Aromas of blackcurrants, red plums, red cherries and red flowers are augmented by the lightly leafy and earthy cabernet characters. The palate delivers a very fleshy, silky and powerful array of ripe red cherries, plums and blueberries in a silky, concentrated guise. This accomplished blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and malbec is in stunning form. Drink now or hold.
Halliday Wine Companion 2019
The wine has presence, charm and elegance in equal measure. A blend of cabernet sauvignon 66%, cabernet franc 13% with splashes of merlot, petit verdot and malbec, all of which has created a medium-bodied wine. Expect a mix of red berries and leafy freshness, some menthol and spice with super fine tannins and excellent length. It's a contemplative wine to savour.
The Wine Front
At the intersection of flavour and finesse, beauty is to be found. This is an elegant, fine-fingered wine with juicy boysenberry, ripe blackcurrant, bay leaf and clove notes shimmering throughout, whispers of creamy, resiny, cedarwood oak having just-enough influence without going too far. Tannin is ripe, fine-fingered, exquisite. If you look closely you see grass, dry tobacco and peppercorn notes. It’s quite a treat.
A Bordeaux-style blend of five grape varieties led by Cabernet Sauvignon, Yeringberg's 2015 Proprietary Red reveals some toasty oak on the nose but also suave tannins and undeniable class. It's beautifully proportioned and balanced, with hints of pencil shavings that highlight cassis fruit, a fine, silky mouthfeel and a lingering, smooth finish.
Gourmet Traveller WINE
This old Yarra winery’s flagship red wine – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot – is always a safe bet in the cellar. This, the latest release, is from the outstanding 2015 vintage, and while it’s dangerously drinkable now – deep, dark black fruit and seamless fine tannin in elegant harmony – it will develop further, gracefully, for decades to come. And in the global context of top-shelf Cabernet blends, it’s very good value.
The Wine Detective
As Sandra’s father Guill observed during my first visit, Yerinberg’s site is “perfect for Cabernet.” Site and vintage have conspired to produce a sublime Yeringberg – the estate’s flagship Bordeaux blend. In 2015 it comprises 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec. Yarra Valley Cabernets are renowned for their softness of tannin yet ageability. How this fits that brief. A shower of ultra fine tannins so sheer and fine it seems to evaporate going through, makes for nothing less than a cascade of ripe, velvety cassis, blueberry and mulberry, with heady star anise, lavender and cedar notes – gorgeous perfume of fruit, spice and flower. Gorgeous full stop. Sensational in its seamlessness, it is pure cashmere. 14%.
