It’s spring! What a monster month we’re having on the imports front.
So, let’s start with that. From Austria, we have Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the likes of Prager, Emmerich Knoll and Ingrid Groiss. From Germany, more 2020s have started to arrive. This time it’s the turn of Wittmann, A. Christmann and Gunderloch. From Italy, all four of our estates are in the news: mammoth praise for Cigliuti; the second coming of the Vaira family’s Monterustico wines; a few white delights to fill out the excellent G.D. Vajra offer; plus a whole host of stuff from La Spinetta – topped by some seriously well regarded cru Barbaresco from 2017. And from Switzerland – why not? – the Pinot and Chardonnay of cult icon Gantenbein.
France also gets a look-in, of course, with a fantastic array of Champagne from Pierry-based grower JmSélèque. And from the Côtes de Nuits we have the whole shebang from our good friend Guillaume Tardy in Vosne-Romanée.
On the home front, Nocturne of Margaret River leads the way with its latest sub-regional release. Other headline releases come from Joe and Lou Holyman of Tasmania, while Stephen Pannell’s Adelaide Hills label Protero goes from strength to strength, with four Italian-inspired wines now making up the range.
Also in South Australia, Ben Glaetzer has made it 12 releases in a row of Wine Advocate 95 points or above for Amon-Ra Shiraz. His 2019 just scored 96+, while Anaperenna picked up 95. And, last but not least, Onannon of the Mornington Peninsula has released its hip fave The Level skin-contact Pinot Gris alongside a super-bright bargain young Shiraz from 2021.
