The Story of Burn Cottage is a great one. Chicago wine importer Marquis Sauvage fell in love with Central Otago on what was meant to be a quick trip of the region. He purchased a much coveted 24-hectare site in the Cromwell Basin and enlisted winemaker Ted Lemon of Littorai. Ted believed Western agronomic theory was insufficient and so proposed that from the outset Burn Cottage should be biodynamically farmed. First planted in 2002 blocks are classified according to soil type and exposure and are predominately Pinot Noir but also small holdings of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. The vineyard is part of a wider farm which includes highland cattle, sheep, bee-keeping and a small olive grove. The wines as many of us know are now benchmarks for the region.
Marquis Sauvage and Fiona Bacash will be hosting dinner on Saturday, 8 February. This will feature five delicious courses, kicking off with a glass of MV Jacquesson Cuvée 741 Extra Brut at 7pm. Alongside Burn Cottage wines will be some of Marquis’s favourite Rieslings from Dr Loosen and Koehler-Ruprecht.
