Bellota, South Melbourne
Join us at Bellota for a special takeover dinner with Stephen Pannell of S.C. Pannell Wines, one of Australia’s most thoughtful and talented winemakers. For those who have visited the Pannell enoteca in McLaren Vale we are bringing its casual style and laid-back delivery to Bellota, where the night will unfold over four brackets of wines, with Stephen as our guide. He’ll talk through what drives him to make wine the way he does, his inspirations, and how his craft has been honed to express those ideas in the wines he makes. All the while, you will be tasting through an equally inspired menu curated by Head Chef Nicky Reimer.

The journey begins with Rosé from three vineyards – wines made with intent, from varieties grown specifically for Rosé and suited to their regions. From there, we move to Stephens’s one true love: Grenache. As McLaren Vale’s true wine of place, this bracket will culminate in the release of the never-before-seen Sunrise 99 Grenache from old Blewitt Springs vines – a once-in-a-generation site that has allowed Steve to make the Grenache he had always envisioned.
The next bracket showcases Koomilya Shiraz, where sense of place, Aussie know-how, and a little nostalgia combine. Koomilya is a showcase of Stephen’s long-held vision to create modern Shiraz, which harks back to a tradition of what McLaren Vale Shiraz looked like in the 1960s and will include Halliday’s Shiraz of the Year. The journey closes with an “alternative” varieties bracket of Nebbiolo and Aglianico, fresh releases that Steve believes will (re)define the future of Australian drinking in a changing climate.
Importantly, and without taking things too seriously, this dinner also looks to the horizon: What’s next for “Our Places”? Each of the wines chosen represents not just their heritage, but also their future, with Steve along as our guide.
This will be an evening that promises to be as engaging as it is delicious, and one that you are unlikely to see repeated either here or anywhere else anytime soon. A wonderful opportunity to taste through a remarkable collection of Australian wine matched to a fun and fabulous collection of dishes from the Bellota kitchen.
Places are limited, so book soon. Tuesday, 7th of October, 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm
