Carlton Wine Room’s first Cellar Dinner of 2020 is named Riesling #1, and it’s unmissable.
It’s the brainchild of the venue’s award-winning sommelier, Travis Howe, and is themed around a long-standing curiosity of his: “Why is it that every time I sit around a table of somms, importers or winemakers, it’s the Riesling bottle that’s always finished first?” says Travis. “It’s also the most talked about, highly ranked and often the cheapest too! This happens regardless of whatever Barolo or Burgundy might be on that same table. Are we finally at the stage where we just recognise that Riesling really is the most delicious wine in the world?”
Let’s explore this whilst drinking some of the Germany’s most elite bottles and make up our own minds shall we…
‘Riesling #1’ also comes with a very special guest, Australia’s godfather of Riesling. That’s Patrick Walsh, CellarHand founder and director.
The wines at this dinner are the kind we dream about. The kind that seem to be beyond reach but here they are, waiting to be drunk deeply, disected and digested with gusto. It’s an intimate, engaging and unforgettable evening with some of the world’s most incredible Riesling sites – plus some of Patrick’s fancy Baden Spätburgunder (aka Pinot Noir) to drink “for fun”.
