There’s something special about a change in season, particularly when it’s timed with welcoming a wine that is grown at a place that is truly one with its surroundings and works is complete symbiosis with the environment that has brought it to life. The 2022 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir, a wine that perfectly captures the character of this exceptional Central Otago vineyard, is one such wine. The 2022 growing season was beautifully settled, with minimal frost pressure and ideal ripening conditions, allowing the fruit to develop purity, balance and finesse. Winemaker Claire Mulholland describes it as a true expression of the Burn Cottage site, with vibrancy, elegance and seamless tannins. This is a Pinot Noir of precision and poise.
Since the first blocks were planted in 2003, Burn Cottage has remained steadfast in its commitment to minimal-intervention winemaking, allowing the vineyard’s unique personality to shine. Nestled in the foothills of Pisa Range, this biodynamically farmed estate operates as a self-sustaining farm, with cattle, chickens and bees playing a vital role in creating a balanced ecosystem. The result is a wine of purity and transparency where refined tannins and bright acidity give way to notes of redcurrants, wild raspberries, citrus peel, and graphite. The 2022 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir is a striking example of what makes this estate so truly unique and we are so very pleased to present this release to you!
2022 Burn Cottage Pinot Noir $107 RRP
Complex with dark cherry notes, violets and bright florals complimenting earthy, flint mineral tones and darker savoury character. Layered on the palate, this wine has a wonderful suppleness and depth of interest with expressive fruit and fine sinewy tannins. The palate shows length and concentration, and while delicious now, there is a definite promise of more with time. Cellaring potential 10-12 years.
The 2022 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is light and fine, with a delicate array of cherry, strawberry, red apple and freshly pressed linen notes. Woven throughout is sweet tobacco, graphite, white tea and finely ground pink peppercorns. In the mouth, the acidity works with the tannins to penetrate the palate with flavor, and it has an ethereal quality to it, which marks it as distinctly different from the Sauvage Pinot Noir. This is an eminently pretty Pinot Noir and comes highly recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. 95 points. Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate Feb 2025
Perfumed and fragrant aromas of dark cherries, blackberry bushes, spices, wet bark and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with firmly integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of redcurrants, wild raspberries, citrus peel and lead pencil. Refined and pure with an underlying power and tension. Drink or hold. 95 points. JamesSuckling.com Nov 2024
A punnet of fresh red berries, cherry bonbon, a little white pepper and spice, floral, with a mint and thyme perfume. It’s medium-bodied, soft and approachable, fine dusty tannin, a twist of orange peel lends some amaro bite, with a finish of excellent length. Kind of pretty and understated. Lovely wine all up. 94 points. Gary Walsh, The Winefront March 2025
