Spring is in the air! Dare we be hopeful? Hell, yeah! For what else is there to do?
And here are some wines to fuel optimism. We have a few high-profile releases this month, led on the mainland by the sensational second coming of Julian and Alana Langworthy of Nocturne‘s sub-regional wines from Margaret River. And then, from Tasmania’s Tamar Valley, we have the annual release of the Stoney Rise and Holyman wines from Lou and Joe Holyman. From New Zealand, PJ Charteris has released just his second Chardonnay in four years, this time from the VanderMark vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago. In other high-altitude Chardonnay news, Shadowfax has just rolled onto the 2019 vintage of its Macedon Ranges bottling. Also on the domestic front, TWR of Marlborough has had praised heaped on its Pinot Noir in a year of exceptional accomplishment for Anna and Jason Flowerday.
In imports news, Theresa Breuer of Georg Breuer has just won Riesling of the Year from Vinum Magazine – a great reason to put this Rheingau estate in the spotlight. Also in Germany, The Wine Advocate has been lavishing praise on Koehler-Ruprecht in the Pfalz. In Austria, Ingrid Groiss‘s singularly crowd-pleasing Gemischter Satz has rolled to 2019. And among our French friends, Jacquesson‘s Champagne is making waves, while Burgundy domaine Taupenot-Merme‘s Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is the focus of an article by Neal Martin of Vinous Media.
