The 18th Annual Young Gun of Wine Awards were presented in Melbourne last night, and we are most excited to share that our very own Marco Lubiana was awarded the top trophy and crowned the #YGOW2024.
We’ve known Marco for just about his entire life (yes, it’s true!) after working with his parents, Steve and Monique, for over 20 years through the family estate, Stefano Lubiana wines. It seemed only natural to add Marco’s wines to our portfolio after he launched his own label from the 2018 vintage. His focus is on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – which he believes to have extraordinary potential in Tasmania.
“I am very lucky to be able to work with old (1973) plantings which is very rare in Tasmania,” says Lubiana through his most recent profile with Young Gun of Wine.
He makes his wines from Tasmania’s Derwent and Huon Valley, and follows the Lubiana practises of biodynamic viticulture and winemaking. With a gentle hand in the winery and tireless year-round work amongst the vines, Marco believes that with enough attention to detail and patience, he doesn’t have to touch anything too much in the winery.
“My wine style is firstly defined by the terroir of the vineyard from where the grapes are grown. I listen to the vineyard and make it to the style which I think best suits the site. Harvest date drives the style and sets up the wines from the beginning. When the grapes are picked at perfect balance with low yields, it provides a wine style driven by soft tannins, fine natural acidity and great intensity.”
Congratulations Marco!
