Roll out the Barrels…
It is with much excitement that we announce the latest news to come from the Punt Road stable – the 2023 Barrel Selection wines. Punt Road’s new-look black label is just what is sounds like, a selection of the top barrels from the estate. Only made in exceptional vintages, these hand-selected parcels are a truly stunning expression of the much-hyped 2023 vintage.
The Pinot Noir is exclusively grown on Blocks 1 and 5 from the Napoleone Vineyard, from the original 35-year-old plantings of MV6 Pinot Noir. This vine age lends darkness to the pinot, with a richer fruit profile, more structure, and a refined tannin structure. The Chardonnay represents just seven barrels from across the estate and is generous, powerful, and downright delicious.
Punt Road’s Barrel Selection wines capture the Yarra Valley at its best, showcasing classic charm with timeless appeal. These wines are elevated and complex, and a clear stamp of the region. It is exciting to see the quality that Punt Road has to offer, and 2023 does not disappoint. Do yourself a favour and grab some bottles today!
2023 ‘Barrel Selection’ Chardonnay $54 RRP
Pear, citrus and nectarine flavours with oak spice, custard powder and assorted florals. It feels both punchy and compact, the latter in a good way, a tonic-like note lacing the finish. Everything looks well-aligned here though it does, indeed, need extra time in bottle to relax and extend. Campbell Mattinson, The Winefront
2023 ‘Barrel Selection’ Pinot Noir $54 RRP
The fruit was separated into two ferments, with block five 100% whole bunch and block one whole berry. The whole bunch component gives the wine an aromatic lift whilst adding structure and a complex savoury element, whilst the whole berry portion adds juicy fruits and fills out the palate. The wine shows elegance and power, with notes of dark berries, violets and spice. It has lovely concentration, structure and length. – Jarrod Johnson, Punt Road
2021 ‘Block 3’ Cabernet Sauvignon $100 RRP
Gorgeous aromatics from the first whiff with its complex array of red and black fruits, violets, cedar and a dusting of black cocoa powder. This is simultaneously concentrated, elegant and textured and while already a pleasure to drink, those perfectly judged, fine-grained tannins will ensure a long life ahead. Fully deserving of its trophy for Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the 2022 Yarra Valley Wine Show. 97 points. Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion
