The Wittmann family ancestors have been winegrowers in the old market town of Westhofen since the mid-1600s. With a mind-boggling 350+ vintages under their belt, and spanning over 15 generations, current custodians Phillipp and wife Eva, of Weingut Ansgar Clüsserath fame, are geniunie Riesling royalty and craft wines that are pure, elegant and sophisticated (much like them!)

Philipp’s father Günter, put the Wittmann estate on an organic footing, and it’s been a member of organic famer’s association Naturland since 1990. After converting all of their vineyards to organic, they were were quite rightly dubbed one of Germany’s grape growing pioneers as others quickly followed down the organic path. Philipp then took the step to go biodynamic in 2004, and completely engaged himself to the cosmic forces in order to better support the dynamics of plant growth and to be able to bring forth balanced and harmonious wines. Philipp’s parcels of his beloved Rheinhessen are a haven where nature thrives. Limestone rules around his home in Westhofen, whose rocks are the sensory X-factor and texture-lending lifeblood. Following in the footsteps of his father, Philipp is a perfectionist who is energised by his craft. Günter was a pioneer of dry Riesling in the region and set the estate on the path to excellence, and since taking the reins, Philipp has continued to fine tune the wines, all the while retaining the purity and ‘inner balance’ that the Wittmann estate is famed for, and it is a thrill & privilege to be able to bring the wines down-under every year.

About Philipp Wittmann

Philipp Wittmann wholeheartedly embraces cosmic forces to enhance plant growth dynamics to produce his incredibly balanced and harmonious wines. The judges of Gault Millaue Wine Guide once praised him as "one of the pioneers of organic viticulture and a driving force behind quality developments” in Southern Rheinhessen. “For many years he has produced superb dry Rieslings with fascinating ageing potential," they went on. "Almost single-handedly he elevated the Morstein site to legendary status." He lays the foundation for wines of exceptional quality through intensive, year-round maintenance, low yields and the uncompromising selection of bunches by hand. The Westhofen sites under Philipp's care, with limestone-rich soils, serve as a haven where nature thrives. For the most part, the wines ferment in traditional, old oak casks or stainless steel and fermentation often continues into the year following the harvest. Philipp, a perfectionist like his father, continues the legacy of excellence at Wittmann, fine-tuning wines that maintain the purity and 'inner balance' for which the estate is renowned. One of Germany's firmly established superstar producers.
