2016 F.X. Pichler Grüner Veltliner Loibner Federspiel
F.X. Pichler
This is the wine formerly known as Loibner Frauenweingarten. The vineyards stretch across the Loiben basin, featuring warm soils composed of sands washed out of the Danube and partially interspersed with gravel. This is the ideal terroir for F.X. Pichler's Federspiel grüners, which are structured like lace, displaying clear and delicate fruit.

Attractive ripe apple, white pepper and fresh herbs character. Juicy, but only medium-bodied with a finish that's fresh and elegant. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This is the Pichler bottling that was long labeled as “Frauenweingarten,” based on that name having been applicable to a Grosslage – i.e., a collection of individual named sites. That usage has now been eliminated, and growers in the Wachau have been encouraged to start bottling village-level wines anyway. (There is still a small individual Ried named “Frauenweingarten,” but the Pichlers never had holdings there, and in fact I haven’t met any grower who does.) This year’s rendition weighs in at 11.8% alcohol, which translates into a lovely sense of lift to complement a flowery, meadow-like nose and juicy crisp amalgam of apple and snap pea. The feel here is glossy and the finish caressing but at the same time delightfully refreshing, thanks to generous primary juiciness and invigorating nips of white pepper.
