Taupenot-Merme owns 1.64Ha of village-designated vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, spread over seven parcels. The youngest parcels were planted in 1986, and more than three-quarters of the vines went in between 1968 and 1971.

I thought that the village Gevrey-Chambertin showed a ripe fruit profile when I tasted it, but in fact the degree is a very manageable 13.1%. Fine mid purple, riper fruit here and some deep very ripe strawberry, with plenty of flesh on the palate.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village does not quite have the expressiveness of the Morey Village on the nose and demands more coaxing, a little broody and sultry at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit with touches of sous-bois and white pepper. Lovely balance here and the precision on the finish compensates for the bashful aromatics. It will need 24 months once in bottle and fingers crossed the nose will step up a gear.

A notably ripe yet still agreeably fresh combination reveals its aromas of dark currant, warm earth, the sauvage and a discreet hint of wood. There is once again very good energy to the nicely detailed and lightly stony medium-bodied flavours that possess a surprising inner mouth perfume, all wrapped in a lingering and solidly powerful finale. This is a quality Gevrey villages and worth checking out.

Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot is in charge of winemaking at Domaine Taupenot-Merme, aided by his sister Virginie. It's widely and correctly acknowledged that the estate, which has been working along organic principles since 2001, is on the up and up in terms of quality. Its results from the 2006 and 2007 vintages are drinking beautifully, and Romain has triumphed against all odds in the difficult vintages of 2012 and 2013.
