CellarHand Newsletter September 2021

It’s spring! What a monster month we’re having on the imports front. So, let’s start with that. From Austria, we have Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the likes of Prager, Emmerich Knoll and Ingrid Groiss. From Germany, more 2020s have started to arrive. This time it’s the turn of Wittmann, A. Christmann and Gunderloch. From…

GT, JC & DC: ’18 Single-Block Koomilya Shiraz

KOOMILYA – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE by Stephen Pannell Koomilya is a special place in a special landscape. It’s so much more than simply a beloved vineyard in the Upper Tintara district of McLaren Vale. We recognise with the utmost integrity every time we step onto the ground at Koomilya that it is on the…

CellarHand Newsletter October 2021

Stephen Pannell’s beloved Koomilya vineyard leads the way this month, with three 2018 single-block Shiraz wines out now: JC, DC and GT. Steve fell in love with this McLaren Vale vineyard as a young winemaker because of the strength of its personality, and the wines bearing the Koomilya name are magical, mythical explorations of terroir….

Introducing Protero Capo Single-Site Nebbiolo

Growing great wine takes patience. Stephen Pannell knows it as well as anyone. Here’s a man who’s worked more than 40 vintages, including nine in Europe. When he started S.C. Pannell in the early 2000s, he’d already risen to the top of the tree at Hardys, off-and-on Australia’s biggest producer. By the time he bought…

CellarHand Newsletter November 2021

“One of my most favourite wines,” says Wine Front‘s Gary Walsh of the beauty leading off the domestic news. High praise indeed but then Wantirna Estate’s Amelia is used to the adulation, and the new-release 2019 is superb. Also creating a stir on the home front are releases from Stephen Pannell and Shadowfax. The former has hit a…

Grenachey Pair: S.C. Pannell 2020 Single-Site Wines

Grenache has an ability to bear the hardship of a changing Australian climate. Seeing how it handles each season leads me to wonder why Grenache is compared to other varieties, and why isn’t it the other way round? We’ve often heard the expression ‘warm-climate Pinot Noir’ used to describe Grenache and used ‘pinot-like’ in previous…

S.C. Pannell’s 2021 Single Vineyard Grenache Release

I am writing to you on the launch of my 2021 Smart Grenache and 2021 Old McDonald Grenache. Setting these wines free is always a moment of great release, and a signal that the current vintage is over. But this year it is not so, and I find myself asking questions: Firstly, will my 43rd…

S.C. Pannell

Stephen Pannell is one of the most liked and respected winemakers in the business, loved also by a wine-drinking public looking for refreshing, aromatic white wines and reds that are approachable and moreish - in essence, wines that are serious while remaining irresistible to drink. S.C. Pannell has been part of the CellarHand family since the label's inception in the early 2000s, since when Steve has won just about every accolade going, including a second Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy and the title of Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year.
In the early 2010sSteve acquired a vineyard, winery and cellar door in the heart of McLaren Vale, from where S.C. Pannell continues its quest for great “wines that are grown, not made” – wines that are delicious, that taste of where they're from and that are a natural partner for the food and lifestyle of their home.
Around the same time, he bought another McLaren Vale vineyard he’d adored for decades – a site he christened Koomilya. On this mythical piece of dirt he grows the kind of evocative, long-living, true-to-terroir wines that are redefining Australian wine. And in late 2019, he bought another vineyard - Protero, in the Adelaide Hills - where he is exploring his love of Nebbiolo and other great grapes of northern Italy.
Pannell Enoteca encompasses this bold. generous-spirited vision of precise, compelling and characterful wines and the culture around them.

2023  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

The Adelaide Hills is recognised as one of Australia’s finest Sauvignon Blanc growing regions: altitude, soils and weather patterns seem to draw the best from this variety. Sourced from a vineyard in Carey Gully that Stephen has worked with for over twelve years, consistently delivering fruit freshness and natural acidity. Stylistically opposed to Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, a wine more akin to the food-friendly nature of Sancerre or Graves.

2021  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

Free run juice only, settled to clear and fermented without solids for three weeks. Settled on lees for eight weeks bottled on the 17th of July.
The wine shows dominant guava and pink grapefruit immediately on removing the cap. Gooseberry and classic passionfruit soon follow along with jalapeño chilli. The fruit is richer and riper than in previous years. Flavours of lime cordial, nettle tea and pink citrus. It's long, persistent and nuanced with mineral acidity and a generous finish. It..

2020  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

The Adelaide Hills is recognised as one of Australia’s finest Sauvignon Blanc growing regions: altitude, soils and weather patterns seem to draw the best from this variety. This wine is sourced primarily from a vineyard in Carey Gully that we've worked with for more than 12 years, and which consistently delivers fruit freshness and natural acidity. Stylistically opposed to Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, this wine is more akin to the food-friendly nature of Sancerre or Graves.

2018  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

The Adelaide Hills 2018 vintage was, thankfully, a gentle and kind affair. Good winter rain, late budburst and a cool, mild harvest gave the grapes natural acidity and vibrant fruit flavours. Ideal conditions for a balanced crop and therefore, balanced wine.
This is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Carey Gully vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Hand-harvested on 18th and 23rd March. Free-run juice only, settled to clear and fermented without solids for three weeks. Settled on lees for eight..

2017  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

I make no apologies, I love Sauvignon Blanc! 2017 was cool, mild vintage that produced exceptionally natural fruit-driven wines. This has aromas of guava, passionfruit, pink grapefruit, white currant and kaffir lime. It's light- to medium-bodied and shows zip and length. Truly varietal Sauvignon Blanc. - Stephen Pannell..

2016  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc

This wine is full of the regional and varietal characters of Sauvignon Blanc. Grapefruit, guava, passionfruit, green pea and fresh cut herbs are all here. This is a wine with a very fragrant, complex and aromatic profile.
Accompanying the cooler green spectrum of flavours is a mouth-filling more textural style of Sauvignon Blanc. The palate is balanced, flavoursome and a dry, with a persistent finish and beautiful crisp natural acidity...

100% Pinot Grigio from Woodside, Carey Gully and Gumeracha vineyards. Hand harvested in early March. Crushed and pressed. Only free-run juice used, with no skin contact. Fermentation in stainless steel, this underwent no malolactic conversion and..

2017  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Pinot Grigio

The fruit was sourced from Adelaide Hills growers in Carry Gully, Woodside, Gumeracha and Lenswood; hand harvested using only free run juice. A natural pH of 3.29 and a TA of 7.10 results in a wine that for me is the most ‘on point’ Pinot Grigio I have ever made. I could also put this down to experience and a deeper understanding around texture, something I continue to focus on with all my wines, but with the 2017 Pinot Grigio I think I got the interplay of natural acidity and texture just..

2016  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Pinot Grigio

This probably leans more towards Italy than Alsace in style, but really Stephen Pannell wants this wine to taste like Adelaide Hills. It shows classical varietal ripe nashi pear with some citrus and floral notes. This is a fruit-driven, crisp and dry white that exhibits pear and lemon characteristics, with fresh acidity and overall balance...

2018  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Syrah

Sourced from a vineyard in Echunga, 410m above sea level and just down the road from the first vineyard planted in South Australia. Stephen has worked with this vineyard since 2010, and in 2014 won the Jimmy Watson trophy for the 2013 vintage. The fruit is grown on well-drained, granitic soil, Stephen’s preference for Syrah. Use of the term is deliberate: Syrah instead of the traditional Shiraz to stop confusion and pay homage to the cool climate style made in the Northern Rhône Valley of..

2015  S.C. Pannell Adelaide Hills Syrah

Hand-harvested and traditionally vinified in small, open-top fermenters. Aged for 10 months in large French oak vats and puncheons. Highly perfumed, vibrant and complex with black cherry, boysenberry, with hints of fresh peppercorns, charcuterie, dried herb and sarsaparilla. 2021  S.C. Pannell Field St Shiraz

Our Field St Shiraz is sourced from our McLaren Vale vineyards: Olivers Road and Koomilya. In every sense this wine is at the heart of S.C. Pannell. It's our house wine, grown where our vines are in the earth and our feet are on the ground.
It's a warm-climate Shiraz stripped back from the artifice of modern winemaking to express the purity and breadth of McLaren Vale fruit. It’s all about the preservation of fruit flavours, without losing weight and richness.

2018  S.C. Pannell Field St Shiraz

The Field Street Shiraz is off vineyards that surround our Olivers Road home. In every sense this wine is at the heart of S.C. Pannell. It’s where we have our vines in the ground and our feet on the earth.
A modern, warm-climate Shiraz stripped back from the artifice of winemaking to express the purity and breadth of McLaren Vale fruit. For me it’s all about the preservation of fruit flavours, not at the expense of losing weight nor richness.
Harvested in late February and..

2016  S.C. Pannell Field St Shiraz

The Field Street Shiraz is grown on our own vineyards on Olivers Road and Amery Road in McLaren Vale. Nine days on skins, 12 months in 2,800-litre French vats and 25% in new 500-litre puncheons. I love this wine and I love drinking it. It's been stripped back from the artifice of winemaking to express the purity and breadth of McLaren Vale Shiraz. As with all the 2016s the tannins are in the driving seat, balancing the sweetness of the fruit. On the nose you get violets, a punnet of fresh..

2015  S.C. Pannell Field St Shiraz

Field Street Shiraz is S.C. Pannell's single-vineyard estate-grown Shiraz, sourced from the 9 ha of vineyard that surrounds the cellar door on Olivers Road. The original Shiraz plantings are 1970 and the vineyard faces west to the gulf of St Vincent.
Spring 2014 and early summer 2015 were quite warm and very dry. Crucially the majority of January and early February were abnormally cool (allowing for good production of fruit characters), returning to steadily hot and very dry straight..

2013  S.C. Pannell Field St Shiraz

Winemaking
The fruit was traditionally vinified in small open-top fermenters to optimise flavour extraction during fermentation. Temperatures remained between a minimum of 15°C and a maximum of 32°C. Fermentation lasted about 14 days, during which the cap was hand plunged and pumped over. The wine was then matured for 18 months in French oak puncheons, 15% of which were new.
Tasting Note
Ample black fruits including blackberry and mulberry with hints of red licorice,..
