About Watervale Gardeners

Watervale Gardeners is a new project from third-generation Clare Valley vignerons Sam and Tom Barry. In 2019, the brothers acquired a historic vineyard they’d long admired—home to dry-grown Grenache planted in 1938 and 1954—and uncovered a rich history of “gardeners” who once tended the land. Rather than fold the site into existing labels, they honoured its individuality with a standalone range. Each wine is single-vineyard and shaped by the depth only mature vines provide. The Riesling captures Clare’s hallmark purity and drive; the Shiraz brings balance and old-school charm; and the Grenache, a regional rarity, is refined and energetic. First bottled from the 2020 vintage and released in 2025, Watervale Gardeners is a tribute to past custodians and a forward-thinking expression of place—adding the Barrys’ name to the long line of gardeners who helped shape Clare’s story.

About Tom & Sam Barry

Third-generation custodians of Jim Barry Wines, Sam and Tom Barry were quite literally born among the vines of Clare Valley. Sons of Peter Barry and grandsons of pioneering winemaker Jim Barry, Clare’s first qualified winemaker, they’ve grown up with a deep respect for place, people, and purpose. After completing their studies and gaining experience both in Australia and abroad, the brothers returned to Clare to take on the family reins, bringing fresh energy to a proud tradition. Sam oversees global markets and winemaking alongside his role as managing director, while Tom leads the domestic charge and has been instrumental in vineyard development and special projects. Together, they balance legacy with innovation—driven by curiosity, shaped by heritage, and united by a shared vision to craft wines that reflect the land they’ve always called home.
