About Stefano Lubiana

Stefano Lubiana Wines established their patch of vines on a special, north-facing site in Granton back in 1990. Their environmentally holistic practices and care for their low-cropping Derwent River estate follows through to the winery with minimal intervention meeting modern techniques. The resulting wines are world-class quality. As Tasmania’s first certified biodynamic vineyard and they have been cultivating their vines using biodynamic methods since 2010. This means that their wines are free of all synthetic treatments, additives and pesticides. Instead, they travel the alternative path, stepping back in time and using cosmic rhythms to ensure soil regeneration as well as effective vine care through all phases of the year’s seasonal cycles. These methods enhance their attention to detail in the vineyard and winery, as they are more alert to the signals of Mother Nature and her messengers. Every season, they become more attuned to the synergies between varied soil types, their organisms, the local flora and fauna, and of course the vines.

With the family’s innovative use of barrels, whole-bunch fermentation and wild yeasts, they handcraft a distinctive range of wines. With most of their 25ha estate planted to the two great Burgundian varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it’s no secret that with meticulous vineyard craftsmanship and sympathetic and thoughtful winemaking, the Stefano Lubiana wines have earned a reputation as some of most revered and desirable in Australia. Indeed, the fact that their Pinot Noirs have won Best Biodynamic Wine in the World at the prestigious London International Wine Challenge on three separate occasions is testament to the special site of which they are the lucky caretakers, and the expressions of purity that they’re able to offer from Tasmania to the rest of the world.

And while the Lubiana's have a strong focus on sparkling wines, as well as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they love experimenting and exploring, so among the classics you’ll find Blaufränkisch or Malvasia, or maybe even a bottle of grappa in the offering!

About Steve Lubiana

Monique and Steve Lubiana own and operate the estate, with Steve as the vigneron and head winemaker, and their son Marco involved in the business and winemaking. Steve was born in Melbourne and brought up in the Riverland before finally settling in Tasmania where he proudly makes wines today. As the fifth generation of a winegrowing family, it was a natural progression for Steve to fall into wine. Prior to that, his father Mario grew vines and made wine in South Australia, with their ancestors in Italy before that, boasting over 200 years of family winemaking. Their son Marco takes the family name into a sixth generation. He’s in the winery full time these days, as well as looking after his own project, Marco Lubiana Wines. Learning the reins from his father, Marco focuses on the vineyard first, agreeing that 90% of the wine quality is from the vineyard, with the remaining 10% in winemaking. Intense nature-harnessing does the work, and pumps are used sparingly for ferments, as well as sulphur being used as little as possible. We can’t wait to see what this father son duo has in store for us as we see a clear multigenerational passion for the craft.
